#Chicago_Chronicles : Evil Mom, 13-year-old daughter charged with murder in stabbing of girl, 15

CHICAGO -- Chicago police say a 13-year-old girl and her mother have been charged with fatally stabbing a 15-year-old girl during a fight outside an apartment complex on the city's Englewood neighborhood.
Tamika Gayden has provided the knife
Police say the girl was charged Tuesday as a juvenile with first-degree murder in the death of DeKayla Dansberry, a high school freshman. Police say her mother, 35-year-old Tamika Gayden, provided the knife used in the killing and is charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor in addition to murder.

It wasn't immediately known if either have legal representation.

Police say the stabbing occurred during a fight Saturday. Dansberry later died at Stroger Hospital.

DeKayla's parents say they didn't know what the fight was about. Her father, Julien Glanton, said he's sure it was "kids' stuff" that escalated.

A 13-year-old girl ...

The girl, with brown hair that fell past her shoulders and dressed in a navy blue detention jumpsuit, stood in Juvenile Court with her hands behind her back and spoke softly when the judge asked whether she understood the case against her.

An aunt arrived halfway through the hearing and stood by the girl’s side. The girl’s public defender said she is a seventh-grader with no criminal background.

DeKayla's parents attended the hearing. Her mother, Sheila Dansberry, wept silently and trembled as the prosecutor laid out the accusations against the 13-year-old. After the hearing, Dansberry expressed disbelief over the age of the girl accused of killing her daughter.

“A 13-year-old girl. I don't know what to say,” Dansberry told reporters outside the courthouse. “It's just devastating. A baby too. But the parent was supposed to (have) handed her the knife, so she's locked up, too, and that's good.”

Friends gathered at a makeshift memorial to pay their respects on May 15, 2016, to 16-year-old DeKayla Dansberry, who was stabbed to death Saturday night on the South Side. Dansberry was stabbed when a large group began fighting at 7:30 p.m. on the 6500 block of South Martin Luther King Drive in the Parkway Gardens neighborhood.

After the fight, two witnesses were with the 13-year old in her apartment, Hake said. One saw her washing blood off the knife, and the other saw her with the knife in her hand, the prosecutor said. The other witness heard her cry out in a panic, “I killed her. I killed her,” Hake said.

The case is reminiscent of the 2014 slaying of Endia Martin, a 14-year-old fatally shot by another girl during a quarrel over a boy. The uncle of the alleged shooter in that case was sentenced to 100 years in prison in March for giving his niece the .38 special she allegedly used to kill Endia. Another family member faces federal weapons charges connected to the shooting.

DeKayla’s parents said they did not know what the Saturday night fight was about.

“I'm not sure. I'm sure it's all just kids stuff ... escalated to where someone was stabbed,” said her father, Julian Glanton.

At a memorial Sunday, friends described DeKayla as an outgoing, sociable athlete who ran the 200-meter dash at Johnson College Prep. Dansberry said her daughter often talked about running track at school and was planning for the state meet.

“The last thing she said to me was, 'Mom, you need to get everything ready, get my clothes ready (because) I'm going downstate,” Dansberry said.
