PIKETON, Ohio --

At least eight people, including two children, have been slain in "execution-style" killings at three homes along a rural road, but no arrests have been made and it's unclear whether the killer or killers were among the dead, authorities said Friday.

Officials say they believe at least two children are among the victims. Among with the eight confirmed dead, two were teens in what Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine described as a "grisly scene." DeWine added at least four children were still alive and removed from the homes, including two babies. Two more people were taken to the hospital.

Sources say authorities do not believe the shootings are random, but they're determining whether the shooter is among the dead or still at large. They added it is not an active shooter situation, but they don't have anyone in custody. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, who will led the investigation, tells ABC 6/FOX 28 they have more than a dozen BCI agents at the scene after Pike County Sheriff's Office requested assistance.

DeWine sent out a warning to residents to be on alert, because he wasn't certain if the gunman was still in the area. He also added remaining family members should be careful.

Investigators say they have yet to identify a motive.

Late Thursday morning, Governor John Kasich tweeted his response to the shooting, saying "Reports were are receiving from Peebles are tragic beyond comprehension. We'll continue to monitor this closely and the state will work with local law enforcement however we can." He signed the tweets "John" indicating the Governor himself wrote the tweets.

The Ohio Attorney General's Office says five adults and two juveniles were found dead of apparent gunshot wounds in Piketon Friday morning.

Attorney General Mike DeWine and Pike County Sheriff Charles Reader said all the victims are believed to be members of the same family. All were shot to death, they said.

There is not an active shooter and no arrests have been made, they said. Authorities are trying to determine a motive, identify the deceased and determine if the killer or killers are among the deceased individuals or on the loose.

DeWine and Reader said in a statement that the slayings appear to be "execution-style."

The FBI in Cincinnati also said it was closely monitoring the situation and has offered assistance to the Pike County sheriff's office if needed.

Peebles High School imposed a precautionary lockout Friday morning after authorities notified the superintendent of shootings that had occurred a few miles away, according to Regina Bennington, secretary to the superintendent for the Adams County Ohio Valley Schools district.

High school officials said the school was back to normal operations later Friday morning.

Piketon is the site of a Cold War-era uranium plant that was closed in 2001 and is still being cleaned up.
