Chicago Fire Dept. season 0: The deputy commissioner of CFD crashed at work !

A deputy commissioner in the Chicago Fire Department abruptly resigned Wednesday. John McNicholas crashed a department vehicle overnight near Lake Shore Drive.

The fire department said McNicholas was operating that vehicle outside department policy.

Police say he was trying to avoid another crash, lost control and hit a pole. Police said that alcohol was not a factor.

A high-ranking Chicago Fire Department official has resigned his command position after he was in a traffic accident early Wednesday with his city-issued vehicle on North Lake Shore Drive, a department spokesman said.

Chicago Fire Department Deputy Commissioner John McNicholas was “operating his city vehicle outside department policy” when it crashed sometime during the early morning hours near Lake Shore Drive and North Avenue, said spokesman Larry Langford.

McNicholas has since sent a letter to Fire Commissioner Jose Santiago resigning from his deputy commissioner position effective immediately, said Langford.

McNicholas “has been fully cooperative with the Internal Affairs Division of the department,” said Langford. He said the investigation is ongoing.

While McNicholas has resigned as deputy commissioner, Langford said it’s not known yet if he will accept a demotion within the department or retire.

Police did not immediately release information about the incident.

The third-highest ranking member of the Chicago Fire Department resigned Wednesday after crashing a city-owned vehicle near Lake Shore Drive in Lincoln Park.

John McNicholas, who ran the Bureau of Operations, was involved in a crash off Lake Shore Drive near North Avenue early Wednesday, according to an emailed statement from Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.

He was driving a CFD vehicle westbound on La Salle Drive just off Lake Shore at 12:50 a.m. when another vehicle cut him off, according to Chicago Police.

The CFD vehicle swerved to avoid a collision, went over a curb and struck a utility pole, police said. No one was hurt.

No citations or charges have been issued, but police and fire officials are conducting “a joint open and active investigation,” police said.

McNicholas tendered his resignation to department Commissioner Jose A. Santiago Wednesday and is “fully cooperative with the Internal Affairs Division,” according to Langford.
