#Chicago_Chronicles,Autopsy in Chicago : Sexual assault suspect hanged himself (?) in Cook County Jail

A Rogers Park man in jail awaiting trial in a February sexual assault case committed suicide by hanging himself, authorities determined Wednesday.

Devin Lynch, 26, was pronounced dead at 10:07 p.m. Tuesday at Cook County Jail, according to the county medical examiner’s office. Lynch died from asphyxia from a hanging in a suicide, the medical examiner’s office determined Wednesday after an autopsy.

Lynch was jailed in the new Division 8 of the jail, its residential treatment wing, and was engaged in assigned work at the time he was discovered about 9 p.m., said Cara Smith, chief policy officer for the sheriff's office.

Lynch had gone into a supply room and was seen taking a sheet and putting it in his shirt not long before he was found hanged with a sheet in a supply room, Smith said.

Lynch was arrested Feb. 5 in response to an allegation of sexual assault at an apartment in the same block where he lived in the 1100 block of West Lunt Avenue, according to court and police records. He was ordered held in lieu of $150,000 bail in a hearing that week, and has been held in the jail since then, according to court records.

Lynch later was indicted on sexual assault, kidnapping and aggravated battery charges.
